The Volkswagen Jetta is the perfect compact sedan. It may not be the flashiest or the most powerful, but it's the kind of car you can always rely on. The Jetta is elegant, yet it doesn't take itself too seriously. It behaves like a larger, more mature car than it should be, and that's precisely what I appreciate most about the German sedan.
There are no major changes on the menu for 2026, but the Jetta still benefits from a few improvements to its various option packages. That said, it doesn't prevent it from remaining one of the best compact sedans currently available on the market.
Pricing and Equipment
For 2026, the German automaker's sedan starts at $29,168. For that price, you get 16-inch wheels, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Not to mention the digital instrument cluster, which also features an 8-inch display.
Next up is the Comfortline trim. Here, the Jetta moves up to 17-inch wheels and adds several features such as remote start and a power driver's seat. Pricing for this version comes in at $31,168.
At the top of the lineup sits the Highline trim, with a starting price of $35,268. Its level of equipment is impressive, including ambient lighting, a sunroof, and more. If you're looking for something sportier and more dynamic, the Jetta GLI starts at $38,068, making it one of the most affordable cars in its segment.
Segment and Competition
While most compact sedans have disappeared from the market, those that remain are more popular than ever—and the Jetta is certainly one of them. It's comfortable, enjoyable to drive, and offers a very pleasant technological experience. At times, it almost feels like you're behind the wheel of a luxury vehicle.

Design and Technology
The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta is a clean and elegant-looking car. It doesn't try to shock, but it does convey a sense of maturity that's hard to find among its competitors. The same can be said of its interior, which is modern and free of unnecessary gimmicks.
The GLI version benefits from a few red accents, making it easy to identify as the sportier variant. Otherwise, the German automaker's sedan stands out for its comfort and spacious cabin.
Performance
The Volkswagen Jetta offers two powertrain options, starting with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. This setup allows the Jetta to achieve an average fuel consumption of 7.2 L/100 km.
For more engaging performance, there's the GLI. It features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque—solid numbers without trying to break any power records. That said, the German sedan remains very enjoyable to drive, quite the opposite. Buyers can also choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Weak Points
No available all-wheel drive. Styling can feel a bit bland in certain configurations.
Strengths
A robust and very comfortable car, especially for long hours on the road. It offers impressive cargo space for a compact sedan, along with very reasonable fuel consumption.
Signature Element
Balance is the key word here.
Final Word
The Volkswagen Jetta isn't a star, but it's the kind of car that does everything well. You don't necessarily choose it based on emotion, but rather because it's the most logical choice. The Jetta is a car buyers rarely regret purchasing—and that's been true since the very first generation.
